Spike Chunsoft Co., Ltd. (株式会社スパイク・チュンソフト, Kabushiki-gaisha Supaiku Chunsofuto) is a game development and localization company that owns the Danganronpa Franchise. The company is the result of a merger between Spike and Chunsoft on April 1, 2012. The main headquarters of Spike Chunsoft is in Minato-ku, Tokyo, Japan.
History[]
Spike Co., Ltd. (株式会社スパイク, Kabushiki-gaisha Supaiku) in its most relevant form was founded in April 1997.[1] In November 1999, Spike acquired the Fire Pro Wrestling, Twilight Syndrome, and Bakusou Detora franchises from Human Entertainment as the latter tried to get out of debt.[2] Spike was acquired by Dwango in 2005.
Dwango merged Spike into another game developer it owned, Chunsoft, on April 1, 2012 and the new company was named Spike Chunsoft. Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair was still in development at the time. The merger resulted in members of Chunsoft, including its founder Kōichi Nakamura, getting roles in Danganronpa games and it was this company that licensed out the Danganronpa games to NIS America.
Spike Chunsoft established an American division, Spike Chunsoft, Inc., on December 1, 2017. On July 21, 2020, the division announced it would publish all future Danganronpa games and re-releases.[3] This affected the digital PlayStation 4 releases of Danganronpa V3: Killing Harmony, Danganronpa 1.2 Reload and Danganronpa Another Episode: Ultra Despair Girls, which were still being published by NIS America.
