There's more to life than just talent. Interacting with others will build character and help you make memories. Let's make something more important than talent shine: your hope.

Danganronpa 3: Despair Arc

Chisa Yukizome (雪染 ちさ) is a character featured in Danganronpa 3: The End of Hope's Peak High School.

During her time in Class 74th at Hope's Peak Academy, her title was the Ultimate Housekeeper[1] (超高校級の「家政婦」 lit. Super High School-Level Housekeeper). After leaving Hope's Peak, her title was updated to the Former Ultimate Housekeeper[1].

She is a member of the Future Foundation and is the Branch Office 5 Director. Her responsibility as the director is the inquiry and secret intelligence regarding Despair. She, along with the other Future Foundation Directors, is forced to participate in the Final Killing Game.

History[]

Early Life[]

Class 74th old picture

Not much is known about Chisa's early life but at some point she was scouted by Hope's Peak Academy as either a teen or young adult as part of Class 74th alongside Juzo Sakakura and Kyosuke Munakata, where she was given the title of the Ultimate Housekeeper[1]. After graduation from Hope's Peak, her title was changed to the Former Ultimate Housekeeper[1].

Upon graduation day, she affirmed her devotion to stay with her friends and follow whatever Kyosuke needed her to do to achieve his dream of changing the world. After Kyosuke informed them of the negative rumors surrounding Hope's Peak, she agreed to infiltrate the school as a teacher, while Kyosuke would open an overseas branch and Juzo become the head of security to investigate. Afterwards, she insists on getting the three of them to take a photo together. (Despair Arc - Episode 01)

As a teacher[]

Class 77th

Only a few short years after her graduation, on the recommendation of Kyosuke as part of their plan to investigate the school, she accepted the position of homeroom teacher for Class 77-B, succeeding the often inebriated Koichi Kizakura, given by current headmaster Jin Kirigiri.

Upon heading to her new classroom she discovered that only a small handful of students actually attended: Fuyuhiko Kuzuryu, Hiyoko Saionji, Mahiru Koizumi, Sonia Nevermind, and Mikan Tsumiki. Disappointed that so many students chose not to attend class, Chisa made it her mission to strengthen everyone's relationships, as well as find all the remaining students. Over the course of the day, she gathered the rest of her students (including the Ultimate Imposter pretending to be Ryota Mitarai), she was happy to see the classroom was clean after having told them to do so prior. When the students pointed out they didn't have to attend any classes as per the rules of Hope's Peak since they had their talents, Chisa gently reminded them that talent isn't everything, and she wanted them to build strong relationships, as well as "hope", with each other. (Despair Arc - Episode 01)

Danganronpa 3 (Despair Arc) - ED (Textless) (14)

She maintained her dedication to helping her students forge bonds with each other, as throughout the school year she celebrated holidays and seasons with them. (Zettai Kibō Birthday) Per a discussion with Koichi, she also gave the Class Representative role to Chiaki Nanami, to encourage the shy girl to befriend her classmates. (Despair Arc - Episode 02)

The Bombing Incident[]

Following the events of the Twilight Syndrome Murder Case, Chisa worried about her class's well-being and low morale as the annual practical exams were to take place the next day. Later in her office, she was visited by Nagito Komaeda and wanted the exams postponed since his classmates were in no position to do so. Even though she was apologetic, she stated she was unable to do anything.

Danganronpa 3 - Despair Arc (Episode 04) - Aftermath (13)

The day of the practical exams, the gym where they were being held exploded due to Nagito's meddling, while Chisa and several other teachers rushed to the scene. After this, Chisa interrogated Nagito personally to confirm if he was behind the bombing and the threats. She slapped him when he referred to himself as trash, reminding him that he was one of her precious students and that he should never call himself something as low as trash.

Even though it was known that it was Nagito's doing, Chisa still regarded him as a victim and informed Jin of such. Despite Jin being aware, he still opted to expel Ruruka Ando, Sonosuke Izayoi, and Seiko Kimura due to their accidental involvement in the bombing as Nagito's luck was deemed more valuable than the three of them and for Chisa to be punished by being assigned as a Reverse Course teacher for six months. (Makoto Naegi Secret File & Despair Arc - Episode 04)

At some point after this, however, Chisa, alongside Kyosuke and Juzo, offered to help Seiko after being expelled when she had nowhere else to go. (Despair Arc - Episode 04)

Investigation[]

Chisa the spy

During her investigation, she was able to uncover several cover-ups by Hope's Peak, such as excessive amount of money from the students of the Reserve Course, later finding out it was being used to fund the Izuru Kamukura Project (Despair Arc - Episode 02, Despair Arc - Episode 05, & Despair Arc - Episode 06) and the murders of Reserve Course students Sato and Natsumi Kuzuryu being suppressed. (Despair Arc - Episode 03)

Under the influence of despair[]

Following the events of The Parade and the Ryoko Otonashi incident, Mikan had eventually gone missing and her classmates went to look for her. Chisa discovered this and also went to search for her students, missing critical phone calls from Juzo to join him and Kyosuke in the process. When she ran into the distressed real Ryota, though she was confused about his suddenly "thinner" appearance, she comforted him and he informed her about a secret entrance under the Izuru Kamukura's statue. (Despair Arc - Episode 08)

Once she reached the bottom of the staircase, she was able to distract Junko Enoshima long enough to give a chance for Chiaki and an unconscious Nagito to escape. She questioned who Junko was. The latter willingly admitted she was Ultimate Despair, and presented Izuru Kamukura to her, much to Chisa's horror upon realizing what happened to Hajime after his disappearance.

Junko went on to explain that she planned to use Chisa and her students to further her plans of despair, and demonstrated the effectiveness of her newly-acquired brainwashing video by having an unnamed Reserve Course student saw his own neck on her orders. Even though Chisa tried to stop it, she was restrained by Mukuro Ikusaba.

Yukizome brainwashed

Acting on Junko's orders, Mukuro forced Chisa to watch the Despair Video to brainwash her as well, though Chisa proved resistant to the effects. This didn't last long as Mukuro needled Chisa's brain, effectively lobotomizing her, to destroy the last of her willpower, and thus, fell into despair.

Now under the influence of despair, she shoved Chiaki into a secret hatch when the latter was trying to rescue her. (Despair Arc - Episode 09) This action resulted in Chiaki falling into Junko's maze trap and her subsequent torture and execution via impalement. (Despair Arc - Episode 10)

She later returns to Kyosuke's side and informs him that Junko isn't the culprit behind the murders of the school trustee's members. With support from Juzo also claiming Junko isn't the culprit and despite reservations, Kyosuke concludes Junko's innocence.

Yukizome crazy

An unknown period of time later, Chisa and her students share their final lesson. She becomes emotional and pulls out her notebook to read a letter she wrote for them, while the Reserve Course students invade the building and begin slaughtering everyone inside. After she finishes her letter, she and her students also revel in despair. She bids them a last farewell and detonates the building.

She escapes the explosion and is discovered by Kosyuke, who quickly embraces her. She explains that all of the students are dead, including her own, and sobs into him. He apologizes and moves to remove her, though she drops her notebook containing a photo of her class. While Kyosuke offers to go back for it, she casually dismisses it and leaves. (Despair Arc - Episode 11)

As Ultimate Despair[]

After The Tragedy occurred, she was recruited by the Future Foundation and became the Director of Branch Office 5, where she was responsible for inquiry and secret intelligence regarding Despair, though her true allegiance was with Ultimate Despair. (Future Arc - Episode 01)

While under the influence of Ultimate Despair, she committed at least one known massacre, murdering a group of children in cold blood. A photo she took of their corpses - which she signed with "it was me" - was used to torment Kyosuke later on in the Final Killing Game. (Future Arc - Episode 10) She also delivered two flash drives containing the Suicide Video and Despair Video to Kazuo Tengan at a military base. She explained Ryota Mitarai contributed towards the creation of these videos, and said he might help in the fight against despair if he was recruited. When prompted by Kazuo if she watched them, Chisa lied. This likely was what corrupted Kazuo and put him under the influence of Ultimate Despair as well. (Future Arc - Episode 12)

Chisa also further subtly manipulated Kyosuke towards the total eradication of despair in several instances, such as during the events of the Killer Killer investigation. (Killer Killer - Chapter 14)

Final Killing Game[]

Main article: Danganronpa 3: The End of Hope's Peak High School

Chisa, alongside the other Directors, attended the trial of Makoto Naegi; however, this was only a cover for The Mastermind Kazuo's plot to force the Directors to participate in the Final Killing Game.

Danganronpa 3 - Future Arc (Episode 01) - Prior to the attack (82)

After Makoto, Aoi Asahina, and Kyoko Kirigiri arrived at the Future Foundation base, Juzo apprehended Makoto on Kyosuke's orders resulting in Makoto getting punched in the gut by Juzo and the trial was postponed. Chisa joined Kyosuke in a room, encouraged him to not work so hard, then visited Makoto in another room to help disinfect his injuries. She revealed to him that she was the homeroom teacher of the Remnants of Despair and questioned why he'd want to protect them after knowing what they had done. Pleased with his answer, Chisa encouraged Makoto to see Kyosuke's point of view on combating despair and to "combine their hopes for a greater hope".

She returns to the conference room to continue the trial; however, before any further discussion is had she, along with everyone else in the room, is rendered unconscious after a canister of sleeping gas was thrown inside. (Future Arc - Episode 01)

Chisa's Fate[]

Danganronpa 3 - Future Arc (Episode 02) - Intro (4)

As Chisa is closest to the large monitor in the conference room, she is awoken and, upon viewing the Despair Video, violently committed suicide by climbing to the top of the light fixture and stabbing herself in the chest with a knife. (Future Arc - Episode 11) Her corpse is discovered after Monokuma announced the Final Killing Game officially, draped over the conference room's light fixture. The weight of her corpse caused it to fall onto the conference room table. (Future Arc - Episode 01)

Her corpse was removed from the table, respectfully posed, and covered by Great Gozu with his jacket. (Future Arc - Episode 02) It is examined by participants such as Juzo and Kyoko (Future Arc - Episode 05) to learn more about the deaths, and visited by others during the Final Killing Game, most notably Kyosuke. On one visit, he reminisced on happy memories he shared with her and Juzo, before stabbing her corpse with one of his katakana and telling her goodbye. (Future Arc - Episode 06) However, the katakana is removed by Kyosuke after the killing game was stopped in order to fight against the soldiers brainwashed by Ryota's Hope Video. He apologized again to her, only wishing he could have been by her side throughout all of this. (Future Arc - Episode 12)

While it likely never became known to her, Chisa's NG Code was "Having Kyosuke Munakata die." (Future Arc - Episode 08)

Post-Final Killing Game[]

Legacy[]

Yukizome's final appearance

Chisa and her death had a profound impact on those she was important to. Throughout the Final Killing Game, she would be remembered by several of the participants, most notably Kyosuke and Juzo. Even after Kyosuke discovered she was a member of Ultimate Despair, he still regarded her highly and deeply mourned her death, as well as Juzo's, as his burden to carry.

Even though Chisa never was Hajime's teacher, he still remembered her fondly and visited her corpse to tell her that he found something truly important to him, which was no longer having a talent. Instead, he used his own Ultimate to recover his friends after the events of the Killing School Trip. (Hope Arc)

Nagito's Illusory World[]

Main article: Danganronpa 2.5: Nagito Komaeda and the World Vanquisher
Danganronpa 2.5 - (OVA) Nagito with his classmates in Homeroom (70)

Chisa appeared as an illusion in Nagito Komaeda's imaginary world following his death in the Neo World Program. She is seen still as the homeroom teacher for Class 77-B and later attended Kazuichi Soda's funeral.

Real Fiction[]

In Danganronpa V3: Killing Harmony, it is alleged by the mastermind Tsumugi Shirogane that the entire Danganronpa franchise is fictional in-universe; a series of games, anime, and later live-action dramas performed actors. In particular, Tsumugi, who is the Ultimate Cosplayer, claims she is only able to cosplay fictional characters (breaking out into a bright pink rash whenever she tries to cosplay a real person), and the fact she can cosplay as the whole cast of Danganronpa game characters is used as evidence to support her claim that all of the cast are fictional. However, due to several holes in Tsumugi's story which make her an unreliable narrator, whether or not she was telling the truth is deliberately left up to the player's interpretation; as a result, it is up to the player whether they believe Chisa's story within the Danganronpa series was real, or a fictional story written by Team Danganronpa and performed by an actor.

Creation and Development[]

Name[]

In the original Japanese, Chisa's full name is written as 雪染ちさ. Her given name is written in hiragana as "ちさ", making it strictly phonetic. There are many existent kanji spellings for "Chisa", and the most common translation is "lettuce" (萵苣). Her family time "Yukizome" is written as 雪染, compromising of the kanji for "snow" (雪) and "dyed" or "colored" (染). Her family name could be read to mean "dyed snow" in reference to her purity being tainted by despair.

Alternate Fates[]

Chisa appears as a cameo in Ultimate Talent Development Plan, which exists in a separate alternate universe where the casts of the games still attend Hope's Peak Academy, but no students are in peril.

Appearance[]

Danganronpa 3 - Fullbody Profile - Chisa Yukizome (Future)
Danganronpa 3 Booklet - Design Sketches - Chisa Yukizome (Final)

Chisa is an adult woman with a petite build, measuring 161 cm and weighing 45kg. She has fair skin and bright large green eyes.

Danganronpa 3 - Fullbody Profile - Chisa Yukizome (Despair)

As a member of the Future Foundation, she wears a long white coat with a Future Foundation logo pin on its lapel, a pink dress shirt with an open collar, a black vest, black pencil skirt, long black pantyhose, and black mid-heel shoes. She keeps her hair, portrayed in a muted light brown shade, styled in a ponytail with a pink scrunchie.

During her time as Class 77-B's homeroom teacher, Chisa wore a white ruffled apron over a matching set of light blue suit and skirt, button-down white dress shirt, long black pantyhose, and black mid-heel shoes, and her hair was depicted as a much brighter orange.

While attending Hope's Peak Academy as a part of Class 74th, Chisa wore a standard school uniform consisting of a red tie, brown suit jacket, white collared shirt, brown pleated skirt, black knee socks, and black heels.

Personality[]

Chisa is a very friendly woman with a cheerful disposition. Her friendliness extends to everyone, even those deemed "lesser" by others, such as Hajime Hinata, a Reserve Course student. She is generally very lively and confident, always working hard with a smile on her face and facing new challenges with a positive attitude, such as when she goes around collecting her students that didn't show up for the class after becoming their homeroom teacher through various, often comically over-the-top, means.

Despite her perceived quirky nature, Chisa is quite competent as a teacher. She is able to adjust her personality to best communicate with each of her students, such as being kind to Mikan Tsumiki and abrasive with Fuyuhiko Kuzuryu.

Chisa is devoted to the people she cares about, whether that be her friends Juzo Sakakura and Kyosuke Munakata or her students. She states she does not regret following Kyosuke's orders and is willing to lay down her life for him and his beliefs. Despite this, she does cry at the fact when Kyosuke reminds her she will eventually be leaving her students, as she had become truly attached to them. It is also heavily implied she has romantic feelings for Kyosuke, and while she does not tell him directly, she does (playfully) threaten Juzo to not steal him away from her, also implying she's aware of his feelings for him as well.

She has a strong sense of right and wrong and isn't afraid to stand up for what she believes is right. She willingly stands between Juzo and Hajime when the former was about to assault him, additionally protesting his violent nature at several times. She was also willing to face Ultimate Despair, Junko Enoshima, and Mukuro Ikusaba for the sake of her students and their safety.

Even though she was noted by Mukuro to be unusually resilient against the Despair Video brainwashing, she eventually succumbed to it after being lobotomized. Under the influence of despair, she became more sadistic and cruel such as massacring a group of young children, despite faking her horrified sorrow in the arms of Kyosuke, she kept a photo of the corpses with the message "It was me" to be discovered by Kyosuke himself during the events of the Final Killing Game.

Quotes[]

Danganronpa 3: The End of Hope's Peak High School/Despair Arc (English)

Episode 01:

  • "Aw, I died. I end up present for a lot of decisive situations, don't I? Like in The Housekeeper Saw!"
  • "This is... ...the story that leads up to the... ...Biggest, Most Atrocious Despair-Inducing Incident in Human History. This is a tale of hope... ...that ends in despair. So, does it have a bad ending, you ask? I wonder." (Danganronpa 3 - Despair Arc opening monologue)
  • "You all have these disappointing relationships, don't you? This is a crisis that needs solving!"
  • "Youth comes only once. It will never return! How can you not care about your classmates? You kids are all... ...rotten oranges! Rotten oranges are rotten oranges. They're sticky, squelchy, and squishy! I'm saying I can't let this stand. Let's go and find all your rotten friends! We're going to take back your lost youth!"
  • "With enough rotten oranges, we can still make youth jam!" (to Mahiru)
  • "As a teacher, there are things you must be ready to do to earn a living, Kuzuryuu."
  • "Experience comes with age, I guess."
  • "You have the vibrant personality I'd expect from a Super High School-Level student, Hanamura!"
  • "You'll find a new love in no time."
  • "It's fine to work on your main job, but you need to attend class, too."
  • "The door of youth is right before our eyes!"
  • "You aren't scum. You're a rotten orange!"
  • "Everyone, get your butts in gear!"
  • "True, that is what the school rules say, but... There's more to life than just talent. Interacting with others will build character and help you make memories. Let's make something more important than talent shine: your hope."

Episode 02:

  • "It'll be fine. My students are all good kids!"
  • "That's totally untrue! You shouldn't just say you can't make friends! You can't make friends through gaming? The games you love are so worthless? If games are fun to play by yourself, they'll be even more fun to play with everyone."
  • "Let's rebuild this school as it should be." (to Kyosuke)
  • "How can you spend your precious break time alone? It's a waste!"
  • "Hinata! You shouldn't ever call yourself "lowly"! Everything starts with belief in yourself! What do you say?"
  • "Okay! Let's approach today with cheer, too!"
  • "You should give everything a try."

Episode 03:

  • "But that was violence, plain and simple! As a person, I can't just overlook it!" (to Juzo)
  • "I get what you wanted to do. But don't get violent with students who don't know anything."
  • "I won't let anyone else have Munakata, not even you!"

Episode 04:

  • "It's your chance to use your talents, and show us teachers what you've been able to accomplish! Do your best!"
  • "There is no such thing as a hope that hurts others." (to Nagito)
  • "You aren't trash! You're my precious student. And I am your teacher. You'll all graduate together. Understood?"
  • "Komaeda was thinking of all of you. He worked his hardest to help you. So, when Komaeda comes back, give him a warm welcome."
  • "I'll definitely be back. Because I'm your teacher. I'm sorry to have to be away from class at a time like this. Still, try to look forward, even if only a little. Together, as a class. Protect everyone. Okay, Class Representative?"

Episode 05:

  • "I'd tell you how I suffered during my half year in the Reserve Course, but it isn't easy to put into words. My just desserts, the pain of separation, unspeakable hardship, painstaking action, loss of hope, disappointment, pandemonium. Peaches and chestnuts grow in three years, and persimmons in grow in eight! "The light of fireflies! Snow by the window! Break, dawn! This morning, we part!"
  • "No! I've got to keep fighting! If I let this get to me, Kyosuke will laugh! As Kyosuke's partner, I must become a woman he won't..."

Episode 06:

  • "I'll risk my life for it."
  • "But I want to be of use to Munakata. I'll do it for his ideals. No, to be honest, I don't really care about that. Anyway,if I can help Munakata this way, I'm fine with it."
  • "I could die for Munakata, I think."

Episode 08:

  • "Class! Don't just stare out the windows! You should look toward the shining future."
  • "It's a time like this that a teacher must pull her students along. We need to charge toward our youth!"
  • "It's all right. Protecting everyone is a teacher's job. When I get back, show me your anime, okay?"
  • "I have a bad feeling about this. My talent is being a Super High School-Level Housekeeper. For some reason, an unnatural number of coincidences have led me to places at decisive moments. Yes, this time, too. I'm sorry Kyosuke... We might not meet again."

Episode 09:

  • "Leave this to me. After all, I'm your teacher."

Episode 10:

  • "Our class rep looking so uneasy is a matter of serious concern."
  • "Hey, Nanami... We've been through a lot together, haven't we? Searching for the members of our divided class and reuniting them. The group, only formed due to talent, came together as one. Without a doubt, that was thanks to you. I really am grateful to you for taking on the role of class representative. And that isn't all. While I was away, you did a splendid job of bringing the class together. Without you, they'd never have become such a great class. That's why... ...you were chosen."

Episode 11:

  • "This is a story of hope that ends in despair. I guess, in a way, you could say the story has already ended. All that's left is for a world that's neither hopeful or despairful in nature... To be transformed completely into despair."
  • "Even though today's the end... I guess I just can't keep it together."
  • "As your home room teacher, and an alumni of Hope's Peak High School... I will be cheering you on from my heart. I'm sure that there will be hard, and sad times in your lives. But even then, never forget what you learned here... And fly to great heights! The thought of not seeing you all again makes me sad, but... I'll be rooting for you all, in your future endeavors. From your home room teacher, Chisa Yukizome."
  • "Boring..." I bet that's what that boy with the long hair would call this. The future became exactly the place Junko Enoshima wanted it to be. My students infected the world with despair. The infection of despair caused new cases of despair to flare up... It wasn't long before the entire world was dyed with despair. I also ended up with the fate she imagined for me..."
  • "Kyosuke, we have to stop this despair! Let's make a world without despair! I know you can do it, Kyosuke. I'll be there to support you. So that in the end, Kyosuke... You can fall into the deepest despair of them all."
  • "Yes... this is a story about hope that ends in despair. So, isn't it a bad ending, you ask? I don't know about that. For her and the people who worship her, it's the exact ending they wanted... Besides, could there have ever been a happy ending for a story like this?"

Danganronpa 3: The End of Hope's Peak High School/Future Arc (English)

Episode 01:

  • "Munakata is the Future Foundation's hope, as well."
  • "I don't believe that the way you think is wrong, but these are actual times. You can't defeat the Remnants of Despair by being nice. The Future Foundation needs Munakata's decisiveness."
  • "Hey... If two hopes could understand each other and work together, wouldn't that make an even better hope?" (About Makoto and Kyosuke's ideals)

Episode 06:

  • "Whenever you make a decision, Munakata, you always follow it without thought. You need someone like me with you."

Episode 10:

Episode 12:

  • "I am Chisa Yukizome, the former Super High School-Level House Keeper. Guided by my talent, I've been present at many critical moments."
  • "And so, hope was lost... A wish for hope gave birth to despair. Prayers went unanswered, love was betrayed. Everything fell into darkness... And so, our future ends here. No. Because now, hope begins."

List of Appearances[]

Trivia[]

  • During the scene with Ibuki Mioda in Despair Arc #01, Chisa's guitar has the kanji for "Kyosuke" (京助) printed on the body.
  • In Chisa's monologue from Despair Arc #05, she quotes "The light of fireflies! Snow by the window! Break, dawn! This morning, we part!", which is derived from the Japanese song Hotaru no Hikari (蛍の光 lit. Glow of a firefly). The song is about several images of hardships that the student in the song endures in their relentless quest for knowledge starting with using a firefly's light to keep studying when they have no other light sources.
  • On her profile seen in the salvaged PDA in Future Arc #09, Chisa's zodiac sign was erroneously listed as Cancer instead of Taurus.
