Danganronpa 3: Future Arc

Juzo Sakakura (逆蔵 十三) is a character featured in Danganronpa 3: The End of Hope's Peak High School.

During his time in Class 74th at Hope's Peak Academy, his title was the Ultimate Boxer[1][2] (超高校級の「ボクサー」 lit. Super High School Level Boxer). After leaving Hope's Peak, his title was updated to the Former Ultimate Boxer[2].

He is a member of the Future Foundation and is the Branch Office 6 Director. His responsibility as the director is maintaining public order via suppression of insurrection, inquiry regarding special/particular criminals, etc., including the Special Crime Investigation Unit featured in Danganronpa Gaiden: Killer Killer. He, along with the other Future Foundation Directors, is forced to participate in the Final Killing Game.

Appearance[]

He is a tall, muscular man with an intimidating stature and is described as good-looking. He has short dark greenish-grey hair, pink eyes, and tan skin. He wears a heavy dark-colored jacket with thick fur trimming and a red crest on his left shoulder. Underneath, he wears a white muscle shirt, black pants, and long black boots. His Future Foundation ID is pinned to the reverse side of his jacket's top button.

Personality[]

Juzo is rough and prone to violence when he loses his short temper. He has a harsh way of speaking and he is accustomed to bullying others to get his point across. He is rather serious, with many of his smiles being mocking rather than genuine. He is described by Misaki Asano as "the most aggressive person in Future Foundation." People who work underneath him in the 6th Division are constantly fearful when he is around. However, he can restrain himself and become serious when needed. In Danganronpa Gaiden, he is shown to be calculating and carefulーdevising an undercover operation in order to confront Killer Killer. He is also resourceful during the Final Killing Game, making use of his environment to create weapons, like an office chair or a pipe, to avoid triggering his own NG Code.

In his official profile, it's stated that Juzo is often misunderstood due to his appearance and behavior, and only a few understand his true intentions. Despite his harshness, he is described as a good guy in the end. He hates people who care more about protecting themselves than protecting others—which is shown by his disgust at Hope's Peak's actions trying to cover up Natsumi and Sato's murders to preserve their reputation. He also cares very much about his friends; he is incredibly loyal to Kyosuke, described as willing to "dirty his hands without regret" for him. He is mostly seen smiling, joking and generally showing a softer side in Kyosuke's company. He values Kyosuke's life and opinions over his own, being very determined to support him in every situation. Being seen as useful to Kyosuke is the one thing that seems to make him happiest, and he seems to relax in his presence. He is also close with Chisa Yukizome and treats her as an equal, with genuine warmth like he does with Kyosuke, though being a serious person himself he is consistently annoyed with how carried away she could get.

While being very prideful, Juzo also suffers from deep insecurities and weakness. Despite his strong desire to please Kyosuke and help him with his plans, he has an unlucky tendency to screw up constantly. He is also described as incompetent at everything else but boxing, and sometimes even his boxing skills fail him. In the group of three friends, Juzo considers himself a third wheel due to Chisa and Kyosuke having a closer relationship. As a result of all of this, Juzo suffers from a fear of abandonment and uselessness, which strives him to work even harder. His multiple insecurities could also explain some of his aggression, as he likely wishes to appear as tough as possible to others.

Above everything else, Juzo is deeply insecure about his sexuality and his secret romantic feelings for Kyosuke, which is likely made worse by his status as the world champion and his country's rather negative views of homosexuality. He doesn't tell his friends about these feelings, preferring to watch afar and silently suffer from jealousy. Coming out of the closet, especially to Kyosuke, appears to be one of his worst fears. Junko uses this to her advantage, forcing Juzo into a position where he has to choose between protecting his own pride and betraying Kyosuke. He betrays Kyosuke, which makes him feel very guilty and angry with himself. It appears that at one point he was finally ready to tell Kyosuke about his feelings and admit his mistake, but he was betrayed by Kyosuke and died before that could happen. In the end, he didn't hold a grudge against Kyosuke for abandoning him and attempting to kill him, believing he deserved his fate as a price for everything he had done. Furthermore, he still cared about Kyosuke and wanted him to live more than anything, admitting to himself that he is "such a softie" after all.

Talent[]

Ultimate Boxer[]

Before even graduating Hope's Peak Academy, Juzo had won the World Championship, cementing his place as the Ultimate Boxer. He fights with a predominant southpaw (left-handed) stance, but can most likely fight either southpaw or orthodox (right-handed), given that he is a former Ultimate Boxer. He would go on to win at least one more Championship before putting his career on-hold in order to help Kyosuke investigate the Academy.

According to Misaki, after the Tragedy, Juzo builds up a reputation of being "the most aggressive person in Future Foundation," and is known for his short temper and boxing talent. He is stated to be able to take down countless Ultimate Despairs using only his fists, and will even mock people for using weapons against him. He is also shown to be able to take out a target in a single punch.

However, Juzo is generally described as very incompetent with his boxing skills being his only good point. According to Kazutaka Kodaka, he is a "weak" character, as he isn't even really that strong from a brute force perspective. He would probably be no match for very strong opponents like Sakura Ogami and even Junko could defeat him (supposedly with her Ultimate Analyst talent).[7] Furthermore, others were able to counter him during the Final Killing Game; including the Great Gozu, Gekkogahara (who is able to incapacitate him with a taser) and Kazuo Tengan (who, with his bare hands, reflected his thrown chairs). Though, it should be noted that Juzo's combat skills were heavily hampered by his highly restrictive NG Code—directly punching others.

History[]

Prior to the Tragedy[]

Juzo was scouted to attend Hope's Peak as part of Class 74th as the Ultimate Boxer. It is revealed in a flashback that, after attending, he graduated alongside Kyosuke and Chisa, 3–4 years before the Tragedy. During his school life, he won a World Championship. He decides to stick together with Kyosuke and Chisa on graduation day and wanted to help Kyosuke to take power over Hope's Peak Academy.

After graduation, he spent the next few years being a boxer and won another world championship, became an undisputed world champion. At Kyosuke's request, Juzo took a job as head of Hope's Peak security in order to stay close to the school and assist him and Chisa in their investigation. At some point after Seiko Kimura's expulsion, Juzo, Kyosuke, and Chisa offered help to her.

Danganronpa 3: The End of Hope's Peak High School - Despair Arc[]

Episode 03 - A Farewell to All Futures[]

Hajime Hinata attempts to go to Hope's Peak's main building in order to talk to Mahiru Koizumi. Because he is a Reserve Course student, however, he is stopped by a guard who refused to let him in due to that being school rules. Hajime got into an argument as Juzo, Head of Hope's Peak Security, yanked him back and Hajime falls on the ground. Juzo gave him a warning and started to walk away when Hajime begged Juzo to tell him the truth about Natsumi Kuzuryu's murder. Juzo lied, telling him that a person completely unrelated to the incident was responsible, and it wasn't the school's responsibility.

Hajime called him out on the lie and Juzo got vicious in response, attacking Hajime for his status as a talentless Reserve Course student, mocking him for being "easily replaceable." Hajime moved to attack Juzo, who punched him in the side and continued to pick away at Hajime's insecurities of being talentless. Instead of driving him away, however, Hajime continued to fight back and Juzo saw no other option than to knock him out, aiming to punch Hajime in the face. Chisa jumped in between the two of them, stopping Juzo's punch. Juzo's fight seemingly 'pushed' Hajime into wanting to take part in the experiment, although he didn't know it.

Later Juzo and Chisa meet outside of the school's gate and Juzo returned the handkerchief that Hajime had knocked out of her hand. Juzo reminded Chisa that the real reason that the both of them are there is to help Kyosuke investigated Hope's Peak's darker side and that there was no need to get too invested, like protecting Reserve Course students. Because of his job as Head of Security, Juzo was able to see how far that Hope's Peak was willing to go in order to ignore Natsumi and Sato's deaths and protect their reputation, and is disgusted by it. Chisa asked him why he had to say such horrible things to Hajime, and Juzo responded saying that it was all he could do to make him go away, thinking that it was better to make the kid upset than have him get involved in their investigation and wind up dead as well.

Juzo and Chisa continue talking and Chisa declared that Kyosuke is the only person who has a chance of fixing Hope's Peak. Juzo agreed and Chisa side-tracks the conversation, saying that no one was going to take Kyosuke from her, including Juzo. He was caught off guard, and told her not to say such strange things all of the sudden. Chisa gets up to leave and Juzo compliments her, saying that she had acted like a real teacher by the way she protected Hajime.

Episode 05 - Beginning of the End[]

Juzo meets with Chisa out of the main gates of Hope's Peak. He admitted to have been worried for her, but is happy to hear that she may be admitted back into the Main Course. When he asked her how the investigation had been going, Chisa asks him if he could possibly get an ID from one of the Board of Trustee members. Juzo comments how the trustees are the ones who rule Hope's Peak, and if he got caught stealing he could be fired, or worse.

Chisa tells him about her findings, and about the Izuru Kamukura Project—which was being conducted in secret. She was able to find out that the majority of the Reserve Course's funding was going to finance the Project, but in order for her to get more information about it, she needed an ID from a high-profile official. Juzo smirks and comments how Chisa always gets so serious when she does things for Kyosuke, prompting Chisa to say the same, which surprises Juzo and he turns his head, trying to shrug it off.

Episode 06 - A Despairfully Fateful Encounter[]

Juzo gave Chisa a Trustee's ID card for her to investigate the Izuru Kamukura project further. He warned her that security has been tight since one of the trustees went missing, and Chisa later used it, saying that she's risking her life for it. Juzo reminded her that she's risking his life too, and she apologized and says she wants to be of use to Kyosuke. He asked her if she loved Kyosuke that much, and she states that she could die for him, to which Juzo replied that he entrusted his life to Chisa as well. She then thanked him and leaves.

After Chisa is out of earshot, he said there's no room for him at all in Chisa and Kyosuke's relationship, but that he knew that all along.

Episode 07 - The Biggest, Most Atrocious Incident in Hope's Peak Academy's History[]

Juzo is met by Chisa at a nearby water fountain and informed her that so many people at the school have gone missing. He also told her that security on Hope's Peak Academy is tighter than ever, but he hasn't found enough information to fully know the weight of their situation. Worried about his friend's safety, Juzo told Chisa to be careful, but Chisa confidently stated she was prepared to die for Kyosuke. Juzo told her not mix feelings up with work, and Chisa jokingly asked if he was jealous. Juzo admitted that he was, shocking Chisa, but calmly brushed it off as a joke with an upset expression on his face.

Episode 08 - The Worst Reunion by Chance[]

Juzo and the rest of the security guard try to keep the Reserve Course students away from the school. They are joined by Kyosuke, who apologized to Juzo for pushing such a dangerous job off him and Chisa. Juzo told him there's nothing to be sorry for, and Kyosuke asked him to call Chisa to tell her to join them. Juzo took out his phone and attempts to get a hold of her, but she does not answer, much to Juzo's frustration.

Episode 09 - Chisa Yukizome Doesn't Smile[]

After removing themselves from The Parade to a safe location in the school building, Kyosuke observes Junko's documented file within the school archives, finding her guilty of murdering a number of the trustees and guards. Upon hearing this, Juzo immediately seeks to find and apprehend her so they can begin interrogation. Before Juzo leaves the room, Kyosuke asks him to not go too far although Juzo states that's one order he can't follow. Juzo leaves the room, eventually finding Junko, he comes to the realization that she has the Reserve Students' under her control. Throwing his coat over one of the students, he gets himself prepared in a sparring position, readying himself for a fight with Junko.

Episode 10 - Smile at Despair in the Name of Hope[]

Juzo was eventually defeated by Junko and the mob of students, although he was able to fell many, there was still a considerable amount left that could stop Juzo from reaching Junko. Junko walks up to a fallen Juzo and explains to him that she's been monitoring him and his secret love for Kyosuke, which she heavily teases about, the Reserve students join in chorus with her laughter. She negotiates with Juzo and tells him that if he does not report to Kyosuke that she is innocent, she would tell Kyosuke of Juzo's secret crush. On agreeing, she presses the heel of her stiletto to Juzo's head, commanding he say please which he does willingly. Junko begins to leave the area, upon Juzo commanding to know where she's going, she responds by saying she doesn't have time for him anymore. Leaving Juzo alone, he begins to scream on the floor in anger, punching the stone slabs and causing the left side of his right fist to bleed.

Episode 11 - Goodbye Hope's Peak Academy[]

Juzo arrives back at the building near the school and enters Kyosuke's office, after his encounter with Junko. Kyosuke requests Juzo's findings although Juzo stands motionless for a few moments, causing Kyosuke to become concerned. Juzo apologizes and began to attest to Junko's innocence. Kyosuke, uncertain of this, asks Juzo again for clarity. Juzo reassures him that his investigation was successful and this is the conclusion he has come to, Kyosuke has no choice but to be satisfied, as he trusts Juzo.

Juzo leaves the room, becoming considerably angry at himself for lying to Kyosuke, he enters another room and punches the wall continuously until his fist becomes bloody, proclaiming that he will kill Junko at all costs.

Later, Juzo, Kyosuke, and Chisa stand on a large, slanted piece of rubble, watching on as the world begins to fall into despair. Juzo, blaming himself as the cause of the mass destruction surrounding them, punches the rubble angrily.

During the Tragedy[]

At some point after getting recruited by Koichi Kizakura for the Future Foundation, he became the head of the 6th Division. His responsibility as the 6th Division leader is to help maintain public order by suppressing threats, such as seeking out and neutralizing criminals categorized as "special," such as Ted Chikatilo and Killer Killer.

He made a name for himself as being incredibly violent and strong, able to take down Ultimate Despair with just his fists. He is known to be aggressive and treats his underlings poorly, working them like dogs. He has many people who work under him, including Ikue Dogami , Takumi Hijirihara, and Misaki who are investigators in the Special Crime Investigation Unit.

Danganronpa Gaiden: Killer Killer[]

Chapter 3 - Bessatsu Shounen Zetsubou Magazine[]

Juzo, dressed as Ted, kidnaps Misaki and Mekuru Katsuragi in order to lure Takumi to an arena. As part of his duties as the 6th Division leader, he has gathered information on him and discovered that he is Killer Killer.

Chapter 4 - Sting Casino Murders[]

He reveals himself after being confronted by the real Ted Chikatilo, who he had been impersonating in order to infiltrate the arena where The Killing Festival, a tournament where murderers face off against each other, was taking place. After blowing up a lifelike effigy of Makoto Naegi, he demonstrates his ex-Ultimate Boxer talent on Takumi by punching his square in the gut. Juzo drops him into a large cannon and taunts him. An explosion goes off in the stands and Takumi welcomes the real Ted Chikatilo, revealing that he had known who Juzo was the entire time.

Chapter 5 - Firework Lyric[]

After being revealed, the crowds began to get restless at the sight of another Future Foundation member. They shouted and mocked Juzo, causing him to scream and threaten that he would punch all of them to death. According to Misaki's narration, Juzo made a name for himself due to his ability to bring down Ultimate Despair with just his fists, and is the most terrifying person in Future Foundation.

People begin leaping from the stands and surrounded Juzo. Despite not having a weapon, Juzo mocked them and knocked out one of the attackers with a single punch. While fighting, Juzo thought back to before the Killing Festival when he had the former Super High School Level Make-up Artist make a life-like corpse of Makoto so he could infiltrate the festival as Ted Chikatilo. When she asked him why it had to be Makoto, Juzo reasoned that he just couldn't stand him. When the Make-up Artist asked if he wanted to fight the dummy Juzo sneers that Makoto wasn't even worth the effort.

Juzo thought about what a pain this was, that he had gone through all this trouble to try and apprehend Killer Killer to attract this much attention. He decided that he can't fight off all of these people himself and ordered the Special Forces to come in and take everyone affiliated with the Festival, dead or alive. Juzo quickly loses track of the real Ted, screaming and demanding he stay put. When Misaki bumped into something, Juzo told her to watch where she's going and be more careful. The two of them discover the body of the Secretary of Defense at the same time and look on with terrified expressions.

Chapter 6 - Possibility of Despair[]

After losing sight of Misaki, Takumi and Ted, Juzo attempts to search for them. Despite speaking calmly, his underlings are seen to be nervous and on edge, afraid to upset him. He quickly notices Takumi who is carrying an unconscious Misaki, asking to be taken to a hospital before passing out himself. Takumi drops a note on the ground, which Juzo picks up.

After the incident, Juzo reports back to Kyosuke and gives him the details regarding Killer Killer. Kyosuke compliments him and Juzo laughs, telling him he shouldn't say things so out-of-character. The two of them come to the conclusion that, although Takumi is tainted by despair, he is not an Ultimate Despair and thereby not seen as much of a threat. The two also wonder if they will be able to make good use of Takumi from then on.

Mekuru visits both Misaki and Takumi at the hospital, revealing that Juzo had asked her for her help. She wanted to prove to him that Takumi wasn't Killer Killer like he had said he was, and offered to help him by acting as his kidnap victim so he had a way to lure Takumi out.

Chapter 10 - Killer Killer Killer[]

When Shūji Fujigawa attempts to fatally wound Misaki by piercing her in the back, Juzo shows up alongside Ruruka, Sonosuke, and Ikue to stop the chaos. He begins to throw punches at Shūji and he barely dodged it. Followed by Ikue and Sonosuke's attack, the three of them managed to do a pincer attack against the real Killer Killer.

Seeing no chance of victory Shūji detonates a bomb, making a sudden, unseen escape as he does, much to Juzo's dismay.

Chapter 11 - My Buddy is You[]

Chapter 12 - To Each Their Own Murder Intent[]

Danganronpa 3: The End of Hope's Peak High School - Future Arc[]

Episode 01 - Third Time's the Charm[]

During the flashback, Juzo is seen on the bridge confronting Fuyuhiko Kuzuryu, Peko, Nekomaru Nidai, and Akane alongside Kyosuke and Sonosuke Izayoi.

Juzo was present in the boardroom with the other Future Foundation leaders waiting to open discussions on what to do about Makoto. When Great Gozu noted that the Remnants of Despair have become less active compared to their peak, Juzo angrily snapped that the number of instances didn't matter, and the fact that they were still alive at all is the problem. He turned to Kazuo Tengan and attempted to convince him to see things from his extremist viewpoint, saying that the "old" Kazuo would have agreed without a doubt and Ultimate Despair, and anyone associated with them, deserved to be executed. They continued to argue until they eventually get off topic and Kyosuke entered the room.

When the topic of the Remnants of Despair was brought up, Juzo commented that if they had just killed them when they first fought none of this would have happened and glared as Makoto enters the room. Kyosuke ordered Juzo to handcuff him and Juzo sarcastically apologized to Makoto, saying that he's sad to have to do this to the great "hero" who brought down Junko. When Makoto tried to respond, Juzo punched him in the stomach. He told Kyoko Kirigiri to shut up when she patronized him, and said that none of them deserve to be called heroes after the amount of their comrades they sacrificed. He continued to assault Makoto until Great Gozu asked him to stop, before threatening him with violence if he continues.

When the off-shore facility is under attack, Juzo was the first to accuse Makoto of having something to do with it and held him down at Kyosuke's request. As the sleeping gas is deployed in the boardroom, Juzo was one of the last people to pass out.

Episode 02 - Hang the Witch[]

Monokuma proceeds to explain the rules of the new killing game. When he tells the Future Foundation members that there is a traitor among them, Juzo was one of the many people to accuse Makoto because of his previous work with the Remnants of Despair.

Kazuo is against this as are some of the other members, while Makoto is too shocked to reply. Juzo makes a move towards Makoto, clearly wanting to fight him again. Hina attempts to defend Makoto from Juzo, who glares at her in response, making Hina more hesitant. Ryota Mitarai steps forward to defend her, saying that abusing women is never okay. Juzo agrees, sarcastically, and then knees him in the stomach. Daisaku, having witnessed the attack, staggers over to Juzo and grabs his shoulder. Juzo turns around and is shocked to see Daisaku bleeding from his eye. Daisaku slumps over and Seiko roughly shoves Juzo aside. After he was unresponsive to her drugs, Seiko confirmed that he had died. While others were questioning how this could have happened, Kyoko lifted up Daisaku's wrist, revealing that his NG Code was that he was unable to witness violence. Juzo is shown to be surprised by this, but ignores Great Gozu when he attempts to blame him for indirectly killing Daisaku.

As a result of the death, Monomi suggests everyone check their own NG Codes and reveal them to the room, which causes disagreement. Kyosuke commands the room's attention and suggests that, with less than two hours left until another person is murdered, that they try to weed out the traitor by deciding with a majority vote. He asks everyone to point at who they believe to be the traitor and Juzo, along with the majority, points to Makoto. Kyosuke gives Makoto the opportunity to kill himself, to alleviate the conflict. Makoto is reluctant and, as a result, Juzo rushes in with a pocket knife.

The knife is intercepted by Great Gozu, who breaks off the blade and stuns Juzo. Kyoko fills the room with fumes from the fire extinguisher to cause a diversion, and Juzo chases after Makoto and Hina. He gets knocked backwards by Great Gozu and, before he can get back up, he gets shocked in the back by Miaya Gekkogahara and falls unconscious.

After waking up soon after, Juzo rejoins Kyosuke, who had been chasing Makoto, Hina, and Great Gozu. He scoffs and seems disappointed at the fact that everyone had run off, saying that people are only caring about themselves. He asks him what he plans on doing now and, because Kyosuke is still determined to hunt down the Despairs, Juzo proclaims that he'll continue to protect him. He tells Kyosuke that he is their hope, and as long as he can ensure that Kyosuke survives, Future Foundation can continue to go on. He promises to help him weed out the traitor by killing anyone he suspects, as well as proclaiming that they need to avenge Chisa's death as well.

Episode 03 - Cruel Violence and Hollow Words[]

Juzo and Kyosuke reawaken after the second time limit. When Kyosuke admits that he thought he had a 50/50 chance of survival, he scoffs and tells him not to show off. Kyosuke mentions that, if he were the traitor, he would have killed himself first, and Juzo is surprised by this. He agrees that, if the attacker wanted to wipe out Future Foundation, killing Kyosuke first was their best bet.

The two of them remain in that room until Makoto gives his speech over the facility's intercom system. Juzo remains unimpressed and comments how crappy it was. When Kyosuke disagrees and goes off to find Makoto in the monitor room, Juzo decides to go and target Makoto's friends. He runs into Kyoko, Kazuo, and Ryota in an adjacent hallway, and tries to knock out Kyoko by hurling an office chair at her.

Episode 04 - Who is a Liar[]

Juzo picked up the second chair that he brought to use as a weapon, preparing to throw it at Kyoko. Kazuo stepped in the way and attempted to get him to reconsider his violence. Juzo responded that Kyosuke is his boss and that him being Chairman meant nothing as he doesn't take orders from him. He threw the chair but missed, hitting a pipe on the wall and causing it to burst and cloud the hallway with steam. Juzo rushed forward and tossed his jacket up, using it as a distraction while he got behind Kazuo. With Kazuo distracted, he kicked him and knocked him to the other end of the hallway.

Juzo picked up the chair and went to hit Kyoko when Ryota once again got in the way. He knocked Ryota backwards into Kyoko and the two fall on the ground. Juzo stood over them but paused when he heard a noise behind him. He reacted just in time to see a senbon (throwing needle) shoot past him. He turned and surprised to see a much-less docile Kazuo emerging from the steam. He threw the chair he was holding, which is easily deflected by Kazuo. The two rushed forward and Juzo went to punch him, freezing up at the last moment after realizing that he can't. Kazuo taunted an obviously frightened Juzo and knocked him back with an elbow to the gut. Juzo collapsed and passed out. Kazuo, Kyoko, and Ryota then tied him to the wall with two loose wires.

After waking up and freeing himself, Juzo was presumably chasing after Kyoko, Ryota, or Kazuo when he spotted Hina, Miaya, and Makoto speeding by. He made the decision to follow them and was distracted when he saw Kyosuke fighting Kazuo. He called out to him and offered to help but Kyosuke ordered him to follow Makoto. Juzo was hesitant at first but eventually agreed with him.

Juzo is stopped by Miaya in the hallway, who fired missiles at him. At the last second, he dodged them by ducking into the opposite hallway. He emerged seconds later and before she can begin a second attack, he rushed her and kicked her in the head, knocking the entire wheelchair over. He looked at the body and then left the hall.

Episode 05 - Dreams of Distant Days[]

Juzo met with his prey, Makoto, and Hina. When he was about to kill Makoto, Hina stepped in and took a metal pipe similar to Juzo, using a weapon to fight. Hina mocked the Ultimate Boxer for not using his fist and instead using a weapon to fight her. However, Juzo simply saying that his fist would go on a waste on them. He swore to eliminate everyone who stands in Kyosuke's way, including Makoto and Hina.

Later when Juzo was at disadvantage, Seiko who giving chase to Ruruka accidentally hit Juzo, giving him a slight injury on his right cheek. The reactivated Miaya also came to the scene, making a chance for Makoto and Hina to escape. Juzo commented that this chain of luck was all thanks to Makoto's talent as the Ultimate Lucky Student.

Episode 08 - Who Killed Cock Robin[]

After Koichi makes it known that he can tell Juzo is hiding just outside the door, he bursts into the room and declares he will kill everyone there because they are in Kyosuke's way. He knocks everyone down, and moves to attack Kyoko, who has the closest relationship to Makoto in the group. Koichi gets his attention by throwing a book at him; he taunts Juzo and points out how strange it is that a former Ultimate Boxer hasn't used his fists once, and was planning to attack Kyoko with a knife. This revelation causes Koichi to reveal that he believes that Juzo's NG Code is attacking people barehanded, which prompts Juzo to react and ask 'so what if it is.' Koichi reveals his forbidden action to Juzo, and taunts him by saying that he felt sympathy for Juzo—saying that punching and being a nuisance was the only thing the boxer was good at, and he couldn't even do that now.

Koichi continues to taunt Juzo about his failures and uselessness, calling him a violent gorilla who does nothing but screw up. He smirks and says that it's sad that Kyosuke only has him to rely on now, but then again no one else likes Kyosuke. Hearing Koichi slander Kyosuke's name causes Juzo to get worked up and declare that he was going to kill all of them for Kyosuke's sake, to show him that he wasn't going to disappoint him anymore. In his anger Juzo lunges at Koichi and triggers a pressure plate set by Sonosuke, causing a spear to shoot out from behind a portrait and impale Juzo through the shoulder.

After Ruruka failed to kill Kyoko and indirectly killed Koichi, she plans to use Juzo as an extra muscle in order to take out her and Ryota. She force-feeds him a specialty-made chocolate, that causes Juzo to enter a mindless state and crave more of her sweets. She orders him to kill the remaining two and he breaks free from the wall. For an unknown reason, likely the adrenaline and pain brought about by his shoulder wound, Juzo is able to break out of his trance and tears the spear out of his shoulder. In a rage, he ignores Ruruka and kicks the couch in the room down the pitfall, screaming at Koichi for having tricked him. He tells the others not to move, saying that he was going to kill them once and for all.

He listens to Kyoko as she explains her findings, and temporarily forgoes trying to kill them once she reveals the secret exit hidden behind the bookshelf. Despite learning that Ruruka would be killed by her NG Code if anyone left the building, he announces that he is quitting the Game and decides to try and pry the door open.

Episode 09 - You are My Reason to Die[]

Juzo finally managed to shake Ruruka off of him when the building was shaken by a sudden tremor. He forced open the secret door, only to find a window labeled "Dead End", with nothing but water as far as the eye could see beyond it. After checking another door revealed a large amount of high-tech machinery, he left in frustration to find Kyosuke.

Juzo came upon Kyosuke just after the latter had destroyed Miaya, revealing that she was an advanced robotic doppelganger. He took note of his friend's serious wounds and reported the deaths of Seiko, Sonosuke, and Koichi, only to be shocked when Kyosuke revealed that he had personally killed Kazuo as well. Taken aback, Juzo attempted to laugh off Kazuo's demise as an attempt to "purify" the Future Foundation; as the highest-ranking branch head left, Kyosuke could now become Chairman and continue his work to change the world. He expressed his continued support for the former Ultimate Student Council President's work and attempted to reveal his affections towards him, only to be stabbed through the gut by Kyosuke's katana. Critically wounded, Juzo could only ask Kyosuke why he had done that, receiving the cryptic reply, "You already know why," before Kyosuke left him.

Episode 11 - All Good Things[]

Juzo is first seen in a flashback then takes place right after the first game, when Makoto and the others are getting ready to leave Hope's Peak. He quietly glared at Makoto on the monitor while Kyosuke checked on the rescue operation.

As Makoto prepared to stab himself with the Monokuma knife, Juzo suddenly knocked it out of his hand and begins to choke him, shocking him out of his brainwashed state. He goes to break the knife, but loses his strength and falls to the floor in a pool of his own blood. Makoto then notices that Juzo's hand is missing, and asks if he cut it off. Juzo says that he did it so he could stay awake and find the attacker. Makoto then reveals that Kyoko discovered that the monitors brainwashed whoever was closest to the monitor during the sleeping phase and that the brainwashing video causes them to commit suicide. Juzo, in shock and disbelief at the revelation, breaks the knife.

As he got up and walked away, Juzo admitted to Makoto that he hated him because he defeated Junko, which he failed to do because she blackmailed him into lying to Kyosuke about her involvement in the fall of Hope's Peak Academy. Juzo expressed regret for the choice he made, and says Kyosuke has abandoned him. Makoto reveals to Juzo that Kyosuke thought he had become a despair. Juzo laughs at the notion as he leaves. He makes his way to the power room and loses his balance. He slams into a wall and loses a lot more blood. Lamenting that Kyosuke thought of him as a despair because he lied about Junko, Juzo says he still wants Kyosuke to live and shuts down the final power switch before he dies, still hanging onto the lever. Kyosuke arrives too late to make amends with Juzo, apologizing for not making it in time before crying over his corpse.

Side: Hope - The Academy of Hope and Students of Despair[]

Juzo and Chisa appeared in Kyosuke's minds, where he stated that he has his own burden to bear too.

Danganronpa V3: Killing Harmony[]

Juzo appears as a minor character in the bonus mode Ultimate Talent Development Plan.

After the player student found a yearbook from Chisa's class, they try to find her to ask more about the class, only to find Juzo instead. If the student asks Juzo about this, he seems gruff and surprised at first, but then opens up and tells about some of his memories, turning out to be a nice guy.

Relationships[]

Love interest:

Kyosuke Munakata[]

Juzo has a strong sense of respect and loyalty for Kyosuke. Even after graduation, Juzo left his career as a championship-title holding boxer in order to help him investigate Hope's Peak Academy. After the Tragedy, he was appointed as Kyosuke's right-hand man and is willing to help him achieve his goals.

He's willing to sacrifice himself for Kyosuke, and views him as being the true hope that can wipe out despair. He is also shown to be protective and concerned for his safety; he became distracted from chasing Makoto when he realized Kyosuke was in danger, and offered to help. After reuniting with Kyosuke during the Final Killing Game, he immediately wanted to treat Kyosuke's wounds, showing no worry in his own serious injuries. He's only seen smiling when he is either talking about Kyosuke or around him. He jokes with him every time the man compliments him, telling him it's too out-of-character for him to say such things.

During his fight with Junko, she outed Juzo for being in love with Kyosukeーproducing evidence of him having a secret photo of him. She blackmails Juzo by threatening to reveal his feelings, where Juzo makes the reluctant decision to lie to Kyosuke in order to protect his sexuality. Despite this, he still feels extremely guilty. He has an obsessive desire to be useful to Kyosuke, and seems to draw self-worth from that. He regrets his constant screws up, and makes a pledge to never disappoint him againーwhich is revealed to be his driving force in hunting down Makoto and the others.

However, Juzo ends up being betrayed by Kyosuke, who mistakenly believed him to be Ultimate Despair. He was stabbed and left for dead with severe woundsーbut despite this, Juzo had no ill-will or anger towards Kyosuke, not viewing it as betrayal but as abandonment. After Makoto explained to him why Kyosuke did what he had done, he begins to blame himselfーrationalizing that it was his own fault for letting Junko get away. In a final act of devotion to Kyosuke, he uses the last of his strength to shut down the power in the building and disable the NG Code bangles. He proclaims that, even if Kyosuke abandoned him and hated him, he wanted him to go on living. He died of blood loss soon after, with a relieved smile on his face knowing that Kyosuke would no longer be in danger.

According to Kodaka, Juzo is deeply emotional, but he doesn't tell Kyosuke about his feelings. He won't even invite him to spend some free time together, instead he just watches the other afar and comes when he's called. Juzo's line to Kyosuke, "As long as you're still alive, the Future Foundation can get back on its feet", has a double meaning as Juzo himself feels that he will be all right as long as Kyosuke is around.[7]

Class 74th:

Chisa Yukizome[]

Chisa is a close friend of Juzo's. Juzo was frequently lumped together with Chisa, due to her closeness with Kyosuke when they were classmates. Although the two are great friends, Juzo and Chisa are the exact opposites of each other. Juzo is constantly annoyed by Chisa's carefree nature, while Chisa is easily angered by Juzo's violent side. Still the two learn to put up with each other, and become very close during their time together at Hope's Peak Academy, having immense faith and trust in wach other. In Juzo's official profile, it's stated that he is often misunderstood, but Chisa understands his true intentions.

Juzo and Chisa also work together under Kyosuke, and were partnered up for several jobs, such as investigating Hope's Peak Academy's dark nature. During this time, Juzo became the head of the school's security, while Chisa became an assistant teacher. The two worked together and shared their findings with one another, using their teamwork to uncover the school's secrets. He constantly risked his life for her, principally when he get one of the Trustee's ID Cards, even if he had stated that he could lose his job for that if someone discovered him.

He becomes frustrated every time Chisa mentions her admiration and love for Kyosuke, and is jealous of her and Kyosuke because he believes the duo no longer need him. Juzo is also jealous of Chisa, since he has romantic feelings for Kyosuke, who seems to return Chisa's affection for him instead. Due to being closeted and wanting his friends to be happy, Juzo doesn't tell them about these feelings.

Chisa seems vaguely aware of Juzo's feelings for Kyosuke, as she tells him that she won't let him have Kyosuke.

Despite their closeness, he was unable to tell she was corrupted by despair. He was shown to be regretful of her death and made the decision to avenge her alongside Kyosuke.

Future Foundation Members:

Makoto Naegi[]

Juzo has a strong hatred for Makoto and is often unable to look at or hear his name mentioned without showing disgust. His dislike was present long before Makoto had gone against protocol and sheltered the Remnants of Despair. In Danganronpa Gaiden, Juzo is shown to hate Makoto so much that he requested the former Super High School Level Make-up Artist make a fake corpse in his image, which he used to infiltrate the Killing Festival and "murdered" in order to win over the crowd. When the Make-up Artist jokingly asked if Juzo was going to fight it, he answered that Makoto wasn't worth it.

It is eventually revealed that Juzo's hatred for Makoto stems from the fact that Makoto was able to defeat Junko, ultimately succeeding where Juzo himself had failed and earning Kyosuke's respect in the process. Juzo despises the fact that Makoto is labeled a "hero," and mockingly refers to him as such. He doesn't believe that he deserves to be called a hero, after all of the lives his actions have directly or indirectly sacrificed. Additional reasons for his hatred include Makoto's conflicting ideals, and the trouble that Makoto has ultimately caused for Kyosuke.

Juzo later saves brainwashed Makoto from suicide and confesses the reasons behind his hatred. Makoto tries to tell him that Kyosuke was tricked and that's why he attempted to kill him, and later convinces Kyosuke that Juzo still cares about him and he should go to him.

Seiko Kimura[]

Juzo was seen to feel a bit upset over Seiko's demise. This could be because Seiko remained loyal to Kyosuke over the years due to him helping her.

Takumi Hijirihara[]

One of the people that Juzo is ordered to dispose of. Because of his role in spreading Despair as the elusive Killer Killer, Juzo openly expresses hatred and disgust for him. However this was a lie as Juzo notes that having Takumi on their side is a good thing, since he will only eliminate criminals and make the Future Foundation's mission to combat despair easier.

Enemies:

Junko Enoshima[]

Juzo has an incredibly strong hatred for Junko, due to the events that led to her escape. After overpowering him in a fight, she blackmailed Juzo with photos incriminating his love for Kyosukeーthreatening to show him if Juzo didn't tell Kyosuke that she was innocent. She humiliated and degraded him in front of a crowd, adding insult to injury by stomping on his head and forcing him to beg. Because of the experience, Juzo wanted to kill her himself and wouldn't be satisfied until he did. Juzo's hatred for her is so deep that his largest grudge against Makoto stemmed from the fact that he defeated Junko before he could.

You cling to the talent of the Main Course students like crap trailing behind a goldfish."
  • "The talentless should act as befits them. If you have time to envy the talented, use that time to live like a gear in a machine. For people like you, who have no talent, you don't need to think. If you live life idly, groveling before your betters, nothing can make you happier."

Trivia[]

  • Jūzō (十三) is written using the kanji for 13 (jū san, lit. "ten-three.") Though this belief comes primarily from Western culture, some Japanese do associate 13 with misfortune. This could be in reference to Juzo's constant failures and bad luck.
    • The two unlucky numbers in Japanese culture, 4 and 9, can be added to equal 13.
    • 4 is unlucky because one of its pronunciations (shi) is similar to how you would pronounce "death." 9 (ku) is unlucky because it has similar pronunciation to "agony/torture."
    • Interestingly he has a one-sided rivalry with Makoto, who represents good luck.
  • Sakakura (逆蔵) means "reverse storehouse" or "reverse granary".
  • He is shown to have attraction to people of the same gender, as in Despair Arc #10 he is revealed to be in love with Kyosuke.
  • His initial draft version indicated him as "hoodlum character".[8]
