After several days of the Killing Game passed with no one deciding to commit murder, the Mastermind realized that the students needed motivations to try and escape through "graduation". To this end, they used Monokuma's Motivational Video to make the students wonder about the condition of their loved ones outside the academy. Monokuma showed these videos to the students because of the extreme despair that they might experience while watching their personalized videos and might give them a motive to kill in the Killing Game.
The videos showed each student's loved ones (family, friends, pet, etc) as they were when the students first enrolled in Hope's Peak Academy. However, in the next part of the video, the scene shifts to imply that their loved ones became victims of The Tragedy.
The students were shocked by this revelation, and many refused to tell the others who their captives were. Ultimately, the Mastermind's plan succeeded; the video caused Sayaka Maizono to break down in despair, leading to her death when Leon Kuwata turned her own murder attempt against her.
In Chapter 3, Makoto Naegi told Komaru Naegi that the captives of the video were originally going to participate in a killing game of their own, but the Killing School Life ended before that would occur.
